EDUCATION

With so much being said about education here in Portugal, I found a couple of quotes that should be enough to enlighten our politicians...

1) The object of education is to prepare the young to educate themselves throughout their lives.
--Robert Maynard Hutchins

2) Education's purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one.
--Malcolm Forbes

3) All who have meditated on the art of governing mankind have been convinced that the fate of empires depends on the education of youth.
--Aristotle

4) The aim of education should be to teach us rather how to think, than what to think - rather to improve our minds, so as to enable us to think for ourselves, than to load the memory with thoughts of other men.
--Bill Beattie

5) It is not so very important for a person to learn facts. For that he does not really need a college. He can learn them from books. The value of an education is not learning of many facts but the training of the mind to think something that cannot be learned from textbooks.
-- John Dryden
